Adversity is an ugly, uncontrollable thing which each and every single person experiences at least once within their lifetime. It can come in a number of different ways and it can feel like you are never going to overcome it. However you can overcome it; you just have to recognize it and accept it for what it is.
How is Adversity Affecting You?
In order to overcome adversity you need to first understand in what way it is controlling your life. Adversity can strike in a number of ways and some people do not even realize that what they are going through is changeable. They do not know what adversity is and therefore they do not know that they can in fact overcome it.
Some of the most common types of adversity include:

* Work problems
* Depression
* Disability
* Abuse/violence
Basically whatever is causing you grief is known as adversity. If your dog has an accident and they are rushed to the vets - that is adversity. If you are getting stress at work due to uncooperative colleagues, that too is adversity. If uncontrollable events have happened in your life and they have caused you to become seriously depressed, that is adversity. Whatever problems you are going through are your adversity and as hopeless as it seems, you can get through them!
How to Stop Adversity from Taking Over
All kinds of adversity can be overcome but it is not going to be an easy journey. It will include time, patience and strong will and you have to push yourself in order to make the changes necessary.
With adversity such as death or an illness, it is often too hard to come to terms with it. After all, when things are fine and then something bad suddenly occurs, it is a shock to the system and we automatically shut down. Grief comes flooding into our lives and it is hard to stop it. That type of adversity can be overcome but only time will help to ease the pain and suffering of the grief.
Other types of adversity such as work problems are easier to be overcome because they are controllable. You choose, whether you consciously realize it or not, to stay in the situation which is causing your adversity. It is completely changeable and you just have to know what it is that you want in order to change what it is that you do not want. If your colleagues are being uncooperative for example, try and talk things through with them. Explain how you are feeling and perhaps take the matter to your boss if you do not get any luck with your colleagues. If the situation cannot be resolved then why not look for another job? Many people tie themselves down to the same job for fear that they will not find anything better. The truth of the matter though is that if you desperately want something to change, only you can make it happen. By staying in the same situation and hoping for the best you will not get anywhere. So make the changes necessary in order to change your own adversity.
Overall some adversity is changeable and some is not. All can be overcome however; it just depends upon which type is affecting you. No two people are completely alike so you need to do what is better for you and your situation. Write down what you want to achieve and how you can overcome your current situation. With strength and determination you can overcome adversity so do not let it rule your life!
