If You Want Rewards You Have To Assume Risk

Which of these scenarios is worse:

1) Trying something new and failing miserably.

2) Never trying anything new because you’re afraid.

I will choose for you because it’s my blog.

Number two is far worse than number one. Here is my rationale. There is an old saying that states most people die at the age of 25, it’s just takes 50 years to bury them. How sad is that? A person in the prime of their life is afraid to take chances because of what may be waiting for them. There is another story about a man who is set to face the firing squad but before he does, he is given an option. He can be executed in front of the firing squad or he can face whatever is behind door #1. The man thinks for a moment and decides to accept the firing squad. He chose death over what was behind door #1 due to the uncertainty. He thought “I have no idea what is awaiting me, so I’ll go with the sure thing.” And that my friends is the mentality that is all-to-prevalent in today’s society. Most people would rahter settle for a safe secure death rather than what may await them if they step out of their comfort zone.

What about all that risk Sam? It’s risky to try something new. Let’s talk about risk. When you drive down the street in your automobile you are assuming a certain level of risk. Driving down the street blindfolded while adjusting your seatbelt is risky. If you ever want to achieve more in life you will have to asume some level of risk. There is a coorelation between how much risk you are willing to absorb and how much reward awaits you.

How much risk did Jeff Bezos take on when he started Amazon.com? He borrowed $300,000 from his parents retirement fund and moved to California to chase his dream of starting an online bookstore. Was he crazy? Even after all the success of Amazon.com some people would still call him crazy for his actions. But look at the reward. he is a multi-billionaire who has transformed the way books & cd’s are purchased online.

If you are not willing to stomach some risk, then you will gradually die a slow death like most others in the world. Stop having conversations with other people who don’t understand your dream and just get it going. Don’t wait around for the perfect plan, it will never happen. Understand what your risks are and do everything possible to minimize them, knowing you will never eliminate them altogether. Wouldn’t you rather be one of the few who were able to say ”I did it!” versus someone sitting in their rocking chair mumbling “If only I would have…”

You are a champion.
