Let Others Watch As You Live Your Dream

I yelled so loud at the television this morning I think I woke everyone in the neighborhood out of a deep sleep. A couple neighbors probably called the police based on the loud roar coming from our living room. I couldn’t help it, I had every reason to be disgusted.

A local sports team was selling a block of season tickets and they went on sale at 9am this morning. As I turned on the 6am news I saw a line of men, women and children a mile long waiting to snatch their block of high priced tickets to a three hour sporting event. We’re not talking about the Super Bowl, World Series or NBA Finals, we’re just talking about a regular season event.

So there you have “Mr & Mrs Middle America” gleefully mugging for the camera with their “We’ve been here since last night” line holding a hot cup of coffee and looking like that guy who has the will work for food sign undernerath your local bridge. So why was I more upset than Barry Bonds after steriod detox? Here is why, plain and simple.

These same yahoos waiting in line for 24 hours with their silly sports team gear on living in a pup tent, are the same braniacs that are always claiming “I don’t have enough time.” They think the Sam Crowleys of the world just got lucky. Somehow we were given the magic formula for success and they were left out of the secret meeting. I have seen this so much in my life that when I saw it on tv again this morning I lost it.

What if?

What if these same people who planned (key word for champions) this day so far in advance actually did the same thing with their dream. They said to themselves “I am going to camp out in my office all night until I come up with my 2-5 year plan that will change my life forever. I’m going to color my face, pitch a tent, roast hot dogs and brats and high five anyone who comes near me. Then I’ll scream ‘We’re going to the top baby!’ each time I see another fan of my dream. I’m punching my own success ticket and it will be awesome.”

Nope. Instead this same person will report back to the slave camp the next day with one less vacation day in their pocket and complain about how much they wish they could change their life. They’ll be complaining to someone who has as much interest in their success as their local garbage man and just happens to be stuck in their own little hell. But you know what, at least Joe Sportsfan has one more day to look forward to, and that is the actual event he purchased the ticket to. He will have that day marked with a big red X on his Dilbert calendar. He won’t sleep the night before because he’ll be too excited for the next day and the big event happening in his life (not really his life but the team he is rooting for, but that’s another story for a different day). What if EVERYDAY was that day. What if he was so incredibly excited about the next day that he woke up at 4am counting the minutes to sunrise.

My wife  had to calm me down and remind me that some people don’t get excited about the air in the room. I said that’s a shame because it’s the only way I know how to go about life. Stop painting your face and living someone else’s dream. Live your dream and let others watch you for a change.
