Bosses Are A Dime A Dozen, Leaders Are Special

In one of my recent emails I referred to a boss as a double s.o.b. backwards. A couple people sent me emails saying ”Sam , you have no idea just how true that statement is…” I said it tongue and cheek, but also realize that your boss, or someone in your office fits the description. It’s just the law of averages.

Boss should never be misinterpreted for the word “leader.” Leaders are very rare birds. Leaders are not yes-men. Leaders make courageous decisions and stay true to who they really are, not making any apologies. If you are currently in the j-o-b, don’t be too eager to be the boss, focus your energies on being a leader.

A leader is self-announcing, similar to a fire. Fire never stands up and says “Hey look at me, I’m on fire!” It just burns and people will drive from miles around to watch it. Would anyone travel miles to listen to what you have to say? If so, awesome! If not, why?

As I say, everyone has a story. I don’t care, you have a story and there is someone(s) who needs to hear it. The key is not to force it down their throat, but to walk the walk and act like a leader, people will follow you and your story. A boss can sometimes be the opposite. The wrong boss will inject their title when they feel the need to impress people or make a point.

I have seen bosses do everything except wear a sandwich board saying “Look at me, I have a title!!” As a matter of fact, I’m pretty confident I’ll see a few with their job titles engraved on their tombstones - and if there’s enough room, they’ll squeeze in the other stuff.

You can wear all the fancy suits, shiny shoes, company wristwatch and use $100 words, but at the end of the day ask yourself this question: “Would people follow me if my title was just my first and last name?” If you cannot stand behind your name with pride without injecting your title, you have issues that require tissues my friend.

EverydayIsSaturday.com is the story of a guy who respects the title d-a-d- much more than c-e-o. Oh yea, that question about “Would anyone follow if it were just your name and no title….” I guess we’ll let the thousands of podcast and newsletter subscribers answer that question. That would be an example of “Self-Announcing.”

If you’re looking to impress your college buddies and boost your ego, set aim on being the boss.
If you’re truly interested in making an impact in someone’s life, be a leader.
Take a look behind you, is anyone following?
