Are You In Your Own Mental Prison? Action Will Set You Free (every time)

July 18, 2009, Category: Personal Development

When you think of prisoners, you most likely have an image of someone who is behind bars. This person spends all their time doing what others say and have very little time to enjoy life.

The reason they find themselves in this situation is because of a crime they committed. Some will be behind bars a long time time, others a few months. They have no control over their release date. They can wash as many dishes as they like and clean all the floors in the institution – they are going nowhere until the justice system says so.

Sound familiar?

There’s another prison that exists, one that is just as painful to anyone with a dream.

Look around at the people you know. How many of them are prisoners of their mind? People who feel as though there is no hope. They are paralyzed by fear, never taking the first step towards their dream. Why is this?

Maybe the tried before and failed. Or even worse, they never tried at all. Either way, they’re afraid of failure. One is afraid because they didn’t like the way failure felt, the other is afraid because of what they think it feels like.

The best antidote for this disease is ACTION.

You’ve heard it said many times that all you have to do is take action. Easier said than done right? Why is action the best cure for this disease?

Action is the ultimate prison break. It’s as if the Mayor of Freedomville called the warden and said “This person has been granted clemency. They no longer have to serve out the remainder of their sentence. They have taken action and are no longer afraid of failure, or even the possibility of what may happen – they are free.

Why is action such a powerful boost to the human psyche? Because action creates experience. When you have experience you have created a filing cabinet your subconscious can reference each time fear comes calling. Experience is the ultimate trump card that can be played over and over and never expire.

Why do so many millionaires have a bankruptcy or two in their past? They tried a business and it failed – wiping out their finances but not erasing their dream. Their dream stayed in tact through the hurricane season. When the sun rose again, they knew exactly what it is they should not have done previously . Maybe their vision wasn’t clear, or they underestimated the market for their product.

Either way, they had valuable experience to draw from and forged forward with a filing cabinet of valuable feedback from the marketplace. How did they obtain such valuable feedback? They took action. Action creates momentum, momentum is energy. Whenever you have a dream powered by energy, you have separated yourself from the pack. You have left behind everyone else who tried, failed and went to prison.

The difference between physical prisons like the ones you see on television and read about in the news and the ones inside your mind is this: You are judge, jury and prisoner. YOU determine the crime, length of sentence and release date. If you decide that taking action will be painful, you stay locked up inside your mental prison until the pain becomes so great you try again.

You know you have everything you need to be great. You know your success is 100% determined by you. You know you have the choice to beat yourself up over past failures or set yourself free.

I’m here to tell you something else: The disease you suffer from has a cure. If you are going to be the awesome, successful, champion you know you can be – you need to take the antidote sooner than later. People are waiting on you, people you have yet to meet are asking for your help. Generations of your family want to be changed for the better.

Gain the valuable experience you need to combat the fear that is holding you back. Failure is feedback, plain and simple. Don’t run away from failure, run toward your dream – you will get there twice as fat. When you have experience you have powerful ammunition to combat the fear.

The only way to gain the experience you need is to take action.

    Hello Sam,
You sure inspire me. I’m all fired up and living my dream! Why do you think people don’t act if it isn’t from fear. Are there other reasons you can think of? My Mom told me I didn’t have initiative, but I don’t listen to that and try to prove it wrong all the time.

    Thank you,
    Trishnalynn

Hi Sam.. That one bit of wisdom has really struck a chord with me.. The times in my life where I have not taken action because of a million false reasons…! Now I realise where I was going wrong, the same mistake each and every time: I allowed myself not to take Action! This is going to be a big change or shift for me, as I tend to over-think things all the time, change my mind a lot, and doubt myself. But now I will take Action every time. So empowering, Thank you.
