Podcasting Because You’re An Expert
By far, the #1 objection I receive from people who have not launched their own podcast is:
I don’t have a very good voice {or} I don’t like the way I sound.
Who cares.
It’s not about you.
It’s about the listener and connecting with them in a way that makes them want to subscribe to your message. Very few people like the way they sound when hearing it played back to them. The reason for this is because you are critiquing yourself in an ultra-subjective way.
Think of it this way: If nobody ever heard your voice before, they have no frame of reference, right? They are plugging into your message because of the value you’re providing, not because you hired a voice coach or because you’ve been practicing your ‘DJ voice.’
Notice I have used the term ‘message’ twice so far and not the word ‘voice.’ You must look at yourself as a messenger rather than a speaker.
Speakers are a dime a dozen and most of them suck.
I have coached clients who have had lisps, stuttering problems and huge insecurities about the way their voice sounds.
You know what?
I made them create a podcast anyway.
Because I’m a sadist? No (although I know one of my coaching clients may argue with that)
It’s because of what the great Jim Rohn said: “Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons.”
Check out this one minute video from Dr. Jim Atkinson, who attended my podcasting webinar training six months ago:
Rock on Dr. Jim! I appreciate the kind words and congratulate you on taking the action I described in the training.
Be sure to listen the Jim’s words. You can tell he speaks from the heart and is not concerned with how scripted his voice sounds. That’s the key to building a huge podcast following.
Dr. Jim knows something that most don’t: If he didn’t cross the terror barrier, he would look back on his life with a bunch of coulda’s, woulda’s & shoulda’s.
Are people you know going to listen? Yep.
Will they rip on you and laugh like high school girls? Yep.
Will they ask what the hell you’ve been smoking to come up with some of this stuff? Yep.
Will they ask what makes you the authority on the topic? Yep.
Does any of this matter? Nope.
Remember this:
If you’re currently in or around people who have a job, understand that they are the most average of the human species. They do just enough not to get fired and their bosses pay them just enough so they won’t quit.
I am a subject matter expert on this topic because I’ve been on both sides.
These same drones will go to their grave saying “I could’ve done ____ but…. {fill in excuse}.
The beauty of recording your own Internet radio show is that it actually does make you an expert.
According to who?
According to everyone who listens to you tell them that you’re an expert. If you say it….. people believe it.
Should you lie about being an expert? No.
If I tried to do a podcast on the topic of ‘How To Fillet Salmon’, I would not say I was an expert. Good thing, because I hate salmon.
However, there is NOBODY on the planet who understands how to take massive action and go after your dream more than I do.
Promise.
Do I tell people I’m an expert in creating champions? You betcha.
Is it arrogant to say something so brash?
It’s not arrogant f you have the life experience and case studies to back it up.
Arrogance is an emotion others feel toward you when you stake your claim to your dream.
Do they matter?
Nope.
Get a podcast and get going (I’ll help)
Rock on!
Sam

Thanks for the encouragement Sam! We all have those fears that threaten to stop us before we start. Thanks for all you do to help us break through the “terror barrier”.

Dear Dr. Jim:
I thought you did a great job! I love your voice–kind of deep and a little sexy, if you don’t mind my saying so. I have no idea why you would be frightened at the thought of public speaking.
I remember the first time I spoke in public and that was at Dale Carnegie training in front of a group of about 20 people and I was truly nervous, even though I had met all of them and they were all great people. I made it through the first time, then the second, third, fourth, and on and on and by the time the training was over, I had no problem speaking in front of people at all. In fact, I went back to work and spoke to a group of about 70 people with no problem at all.
But, back to you, I think you should be very proud of yourself and you should continue to speak as often as you can!
I would love to speak but I do not have the equipment necessary to do so.
Live free from your fears!

Hi, Sam
You come across genuine, so I guess you are!! I could not listen to the video, because my computer refused to activate it; so I can’t comment on that.
I would love to hwE what I sound like on video, if it’s at all possible. Not my voice, but my enthusiasm, of which I have lots. I just want to know whether I convey it when I talk to people.
Thanks, and warm greetings, Mindi

Thanks Jim, and thankyou Sam. I am stuck in the getting ready to get ready trap, by choice. I appreciate all of the leadership training that you offer Sam and I believe that I am encouraging the kind of leadership that my two sons deserve to see in our world.

Hi Leigh Ann,
You’re welcome.
Yes, so many have fears.
The fear never goes away, it just gets met with unwavering commitment – knowing that we must succeed or we live a life of regret.
Question: Is the pain of moving forward worse than the pain of going back?
Rock On Leigh Ann!
PS Anyone who can be a Happy Marriage Coach is alright with me:)

WOW !!! Thank you for all the positive and reinforcing comments. More than anything, thank you Sam, just for being you. I left Higher Education Administration to become more than was required of me. Sam gave me encouragement to keep trying and the lessons on podcasting were invaluable. Once again, thank you Sam.
ps. My little podcast has over 400 subscribers and 4000 downloads. The world will listen to what you have to say so say it BIG, but for sure, say it….drjim
