Prime The Success Pump

June 17, 2009, Category: Personal Development

Which is stronger in your life right now?

The confidence of moving forward with your dream? Or…

The fear of what might happen if you do?

For many, the fear they feel about the ‘unknown’ is so incredibly strong, they would rather stay where they are. It’s comfortable, it’s doesn’t hurt too much and they know what they have – the sure thing.

The other side is too much for them to handle.

They have no idea what to expect and the pain involved is intimidating. The pain represents how much they have to grow to achieve their dream. The pain also represents the relationships they have to terminate in order to be the ‘new’ person they want so badly to become.

Straight up – if you want to venture into new areas and be ‘somebody’-  it’s going to be painful.

If you’ve never exercised before and you go to the gym – expect some pain. The pain is not going to be just one day, it’s there for a few weeks until your body adapts to all the shock (workouts) you are putting it through.

In business it’s the same thing.

Expect the pain of failing, throwing good money after bad trying to find the right solution for your business.

I can speak chapter and verse about all the various angles I tried when launching my online business. It seemed like I was paying a different vendor every hour. Somebody always had a better solution for me and it always cost me money.

I was uncomfortable.

I wasn’t used to paying for things that did not have an immediate benefit. I was investing time creating products and money to promote them and not realizing a return on my investment.

But after awhile I became better at identifying what my business needed and what I could live without for the time being. I was ‘priming the pump’ for months and was started to see the positive effects.

When you prime a pump you can labor for a long time before any water comes trickling out. Your arm may feel like it’s about to detach from your shoulder but you have to keep pumping. If you stop, you’re guaranteed to have no water.

When the water finally reaches the top, all you have to do is keep a steady hand on it and it will never stop running.

No different with your business.

I have never met a business owner who didn’t have to prime the pump for months and years before they realized their dream. Truth be told, you shouldn’t want it any other way. If it were so easy, you’d have a million yahoos selling stuff that hadn’t been market-tested. The cream would not rise to the top.

Continue to invest the time and money needed to keep your dream alive. If you don’t have all the money, invest some. If you don’t have all the time, invest what you can. Keep the pump primed and water will overflow when the time is right. Your Saturday will happen.

Stop working the pump and you’re stuck on Monday forever.
